Somehow, whatever the defects of Mexican society or governance, they are ignorable because of the abuse suffered at the hands of the (at one time slave- holding) colossus to the North. It is a comforting thought, that the failure of Mexico to thrive is because of our continental domination. Of course, Canada is doing rather well, so there may be a hole in the theory.
