You're wrongfully assuming that all poor people are lazy and that's the primary cause of their misfortune. I hear of many who pull off two full time jobs in order to make ends barely meet. Education is largely key and opens doors for the better paying jobs. But quality education in the USA is expensive and for the lucky few. You have to live in the right neighborhood. Your education system is funded mainly by property taxes and in poor areas/inner cities the funding is sparse compared to the richer suburbs.

Regarding all-nighters:
Many who routinely pull off "all nighters" never get their expected rewards. It's common practice for employers to always give out mediocre marks in performance reviews no matter the effort or ability, to stem any expectancy of getting a raise. If the unemployment rate for your discipline is high, then you've little choice but to take it in the chin. Meanwhile you've no personal life. In my opinion, unless you're a workaholic who truly enjoys what you do and lives for doing it, it's a waste of effort to over-extend yourself in hopes of getting that elusive promotion. Often there are political considerations (always saying the right things, being modest, genuflecting, making your superiors look good, rubbing elbows with the right people etc.) and luck involved (being in the right place at the right time).

But, I guess things can't be that bad for you since you've time to post on this forum.
