The thing about the UN is that they keep saying that they know how to do this better than we do, and we should let the experts take care of it. It's only human to wish that somebody knows more than you do. Like General Clark wishing that the ACLU would have given us advice about surveillance. Having worked with the ACLU, I know that there is paid non-lawyer staff, and the lawyers are mostly volunteers, collected ad hoc. They have a different perspective than, say, the lawyers who work for the Justice Department or the lawyers who work for Congress, but they aren't smarter or better lawyers. If only the world was run by people as smart as the guys in Star Trek, or science fiction movies. But it's not. We're the grown-ups, the wise men. We're about as good as it gets.
