I worked in D.C. for six years, and when people from out of town came to visit and ask for a tour, the Wall was the first place I took them. Some of them got angry with me for doing so.

During the day it's special, often you will find a vet on his knees, eyes closed hard to hold back the tears, some little offering in front of him for friends who he lost.

But it's at night that it really hits you, because you have the whole place to yourself. Nothing but the dark sky and the pitch black wall, and the only thing to focus on are all those names staring back at you.
