Dont like the sound of this. Given way Qualcommm reacts in the markets, I dont think this has had wide release.

The Chinese do not have a long track record of respect for WTO policy. This is just the type of action which can send the Q back to its natural home....:-(

Broadcom Launches Broadside Against China

(30/01/2004, BWCS staff) US wireless LAN vendor Broadcom has stated that it will not supply its wireless products to China because of the
onerous conditions that are being placed on equipment sold within the Peoples Republic. The Chinese authorities have ruled that from December
2003 all imported WiFi equipment must comply with a new domestic security standard called Wired Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure
(WAPI). Only a few chosen Chinese manufacturers have access to the WAPI specification and all chips used within W-LAN equipment must also
be made in China.

Under the new regime the Chinese authorities will require access to intellectual property governing the design of imported wireless chip technology.
Broadcom and other leading WiFi vendors are concerned that complying with the new rules will enable Chinese manufacturers to replicate their
products. It has also been suggested by security experts that WAPI is designed to enable the authorities to monitor traffic over WiFi networks.
