MYDOOM VIRUS SPREADS, TARGETS SOFTWARE COMPANY

[cant see how the hackers are going to get any sympathy votes against the big guys with this type of practice. Silly. Getting my system backed up on removable media today..pb]

Virus hunters have also discovered that MyDoom includes a time bomb, meant to attack the Web site of the software company SCO Group on Feb. 1.

Recently, SCO has begun suing companies that use Linux, saying that it owns a patent to parts of that software system. Investigators believe that a proponent of Linux as a free, "open source" product is behind the attacks.

The company has posted a $250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the writer of MyDoom.

The MyDoom virus arrives as a text attachment that, when opened, mails itself to 100 other addresses and opens a "port," or spyhole, on the user's computer. It also prepares the host computer to launch an attack that could overload SCO's Web site.

Antivirus companies say MyDoom is particularly virulent because it comes with different subject lines and return addresses, and more people are willing to open text attachments. McAfee and other antivirus makers have given MyDoom their highest warning rating, saying that it's clogging networks like no other strain before it.

Messagelab, another antivirus company, said one in every 12 e-mails transmitted yesterday contained the MyDoom virus. By comparison, one in 17 e-mails carried the SoBig infection last August.
