The only people dreaming are the Iranians who died after being sprayed with chemical weapons before, during, and after Rumsfeld's visit to Saddam. I doubt they are thankful that the U.S. was providing targeting data and drawing up battle plans for Iraq as Saddam exterminated them.

And that support for Saddam continued through the decade. Here are some comments made in 1990:
