That is the way I see it too. The problem of blending the two parties is that, it not only limits choice, but it fuzzes positions such that politicians are not forced to make tough decisions - only those decisions that give them "stay-in-office" power. Many of them don't even sweat making a pretense of caring what their constituients think on a given policy or issue.
