... really dont see GSM/1x chipset sales as being much more than a small drop in Qualcomm's large bucket of sales.

Multimode GSM/1Xrtt handsets may offer very little to the typical GSM subscriber, but they would be VERY attractive to CDMA subscribers, a vast majority of which would jump at the chance to gain access to the global roaming capabilities of GSM for a 10% incremental cost, IMO. Personally, I would love to use my Sprint phone overseas instead of my AT&T one. It would perhaps be a zero sum game for QCOM, but for CDMA operators, it would level the playing, taking away one of the biggest advantages of GSM. Hopefully, Sprint and VZ recognize this and make a push to offer multimode handsets, although they have always been laggards in roaming, even among their CDMA brethren internationally.

Slacker, Re: VOD CC Japan and GSM1x-" really dont see GSM/1x chipset sales as being much more than a small drop in Qualcomm's large bucket of sales."

Appreciate your insight and "Qualcomm's large bucket".

Re: VOD CC / J-Phone and “are in a holding pattern in Japan until they can get a W-CDMA platform/services up and running.”

Did they go into any detail- phone performance, etc?

Are they using phones equipped with QCOM chipsets yet?

TIA- jim
