"Hopefully in time the seeds of democracy will take root."

>>> Goldie, is that your strategy? Wait and hope for good news?

>>> How about places where there is already a national desire for Democracy, and that desire is being brutally supressed, like Burma?

>>> Should we 'wait' for the Dictators to 'turn a new leaf'?

>>> The war on terror has made it essential that we attempt to democratize the Middle East.<<<

We can not do that. Only they can do that. It is a violation of international law in order to invade another nation in order to install democracy, or communism, or socialism or any other kind of government.

>>>The threatening nature of Saddam and the more secular nature of Iraqis made them a good prospect. This is why we did not invade Saudi Arabia.<<<

The US has used its influence to keep those Arab monarchies in power. It is precisely this reason why movements such Al Qaeda have been able to grow. Al Qaeda got considerably stronger after the US put its troops into Saudi Arabia. And terrorism will grow even greater due to US troops now occupying Iraq.

Saddam was no threat to the US. He wasn't even a threat to his neighbors, all of whom opposed the US invasion. Do some research on Arab tpre-war thinking.

>>>At this time, Saudi Arabia cannot be westernized and we are not going to kill millions of people for any purpose. Hopefully in time the seeds of democracy will take root.<<<

Once again, democracy has to come from them--not the US!

In fact, the US should work on its own democracy in light of how Bush got to become president and in light of the fact that slightly over 25 percent of Americans elect our president and vice president; 17 percent elect our governors and about eight percent elect our municipal leaders.
