Nearly all Americans perceive themselves to be middle class, whether they are in the bottom quintile or the top quintile.

( Something like 76%* of Americans in the top quintile believe they are middle class, while something like 60%* in the bottom quintile think they are middleclass. * Not sure about the numbers, but believe it was a large majority. )

When nearly everyone in a country perceives themselves to be middleclass, that sets the tone of the nation.
