In the OBL video broadcast shortly after the 9-11 attacks --- surely most Americans first awareness of OBL --- he said: "Democracy and human rights in America and the West will be dead...." He clearly expected our governmental reactions (turn toward Authoritarianism, encroachments on our Constitutional liberties, further entrenching of government secrecy, etc.), during this period of heightened anxiety, to ultimately do more damage to the Western way of life and our Democratic societies... then he ever could accomplish on his own.
