Saddam got rid of his WMDs after he'd already lied to the UN about them, but at a time when he did not realize how thorough the UN searches would be. When the UN inspectors came up with evidence of WMDs that Saddam had already secretly destroyed, Saddam was left with no proof that they had been destroyed.

Yeah it was pretty stupid.

And now we're stuck in a quagmire for it.

By the way, what do you think happens to Israel after the US runs away from Iraq? Do you think that some of those surface to air missiles that are taking out so many of our helicopters will find their way into Jordan or Syria and then to Israel? What kind of an effect do you think it would have if jet liners using Israel's airports were regularly subjected to missile attacks? Do you think that this would have an effect on the Israeli economy?
