"I think schools should have diversity - including white people." The economics don't work out for most. The difference in pay of a Masters or a PhD isn't all that much over just a BS in those fields. Now a higher degree can make a difference in the jobs you get offered, and, like in my case, it's an opportunity to do research.

I stopped by a Berkeley CS lab, and saw around 40 Asian students, but didn't see a white student in the lab. I think schools should have diversity - including white people. Unfortunately, the white guys have turned into slackers. The white girls are doing well but the brighter ones seem to go mostly into law or medicine, and not into computer engineering or engineering in general. And I am not kidding about the guys. I am taking undergrad classes and I am student teaching at a middle school. Its the same in both places.........the guys have no discipline and screw off more than they work. I can't tell you how normal its become to have a guy be ADD or special ed. and to be on Ritalin or the latest schiesse that they've come up with to drug kids. And the drugs are screwing them up even more. Today, a kid came into the class and he couldn't stop crying. After about ten minutes, the teacher went up to the kid and he shook his head vigorously and said he was okay. However, he continued to break down periodically. Finally, I went up to him and asked what was going on......expecting because I was male, that he would blow me off faster than he did the female teacher. Strangely enough, he opened up and told me that he was depressed and that two years ago they put him on Ritalin and since then about once every two months he goes into a deep depression where he sees little hope for the future. He said today it was worse than normal and that's why he couldn't stop crying. Later in the day, as school let out, he turned and looked at me unexpectantly and the look of bleakness in his eyes was one I have never seen in a kid. I am really p*ssed. This is a guy......even now, guys are now supposed to cry esp. not in the 8th grade. He knows that and he was embarrassed on top of everything else.....but still he couldn't stop. I have never seen a guy cry that way before. What the fukk is wrong with parents that they take the easy way out and drug their kids. And I don't want to hear that it helps kids. Maybe it helps adults to medicate away depression but it can only screw up kids who barely have a grasp on their emotions to begin with. In any case, recent studies have said that American boys are in trouble academically and now I am seeing the evidence of it very clearly. The girls have had a whole generation of feminism; the guys just are expected to cope. It amazes me but adults expect boys will be okay when they get an emotional body blow or a crisis. That BS is just not true! So if you're wondering why there are no white guys in Berkeley's computer.......well Ritalin may be the reason. BTW the kids who are being drugged are usually the bright ones. Sorry for the rant but it was a tough day. And just so you know, this kid today was not an isolated case.......there are many of these guys who are ADD or special ed.......they usually make up 1/5 of the boys in the class. Its hard to watch them flounder away their lives. ted
