A public figure does not get a pass on basic honesty. A person has character or not. Who care who speculates what. The fact a person had some illness is a so what especially in this instance. What family was he trying to protect from what. I had cancer and I cured.... duhhhhh That justifies lying to you, Fine... It's clear example of a character flaw to me. Reaching for the expedient lie.
