Hey, what ever happened to the dead or alive talk about bin Laden? To be blunt, American ME policy sucks and has sucked for 50 years. And before us, the British policy sucked for another 50. Before that, it just didn't matter because they couldn't project their influence. When they did, they got smacked down. When we got hit with the first oil embargo, the intelligent thing would have been to begin a plan of energy independence and minimize our interaction with the ME. Quite honestly, people in the ME and Balkans have been killing each other for so long, I don't think there is any political solution short of massive relocation. Everyone in the Balkans has to move to a random spot in the ME. Everyone in the ME has to move to a random spot in the Balkans. And while we are at it, give 'em a magic pill that makes them forget everything that happened more than 5 years ago and abandon any notion of culture and religion. But that doesn't look or sound like democracy, does it? Other than that, all we can do is keep them contained, minimize the flow of money and arms, and try to keep our head down. This is like the south-central LA gang wars. How would one reduce that? Remove the sources of criminal enterprise revenue (oil money in the case of the ME). Let the invisible hand of Adam Smith do the rest. It is a policy of Isolationism, which I think is fine for countries that aren't well armed. The problem is that rich a-holes and short sighted hawks armed them. Who the heck would give bin Laden shoulder-launched missiles? The CIA. Now we, as a country, are sorry. Sorry don't mean much.
