After the crash I had to take the 'puter back to its Mother Shop to be formatted. Nuthin' I had would touch it. Here's the legend. Everything was just fine until Christmas came along. I was running smoothly using Win98 on my 1.2GHz Celeron w/ 40GB HD (C:\Drive) when early X-mas gifts arrived in the form of a Maxtor 200GB HD and a TDK DVD RW [everything] + CD and an OS duo in the form Win2K and XP Pro. (I guess asking me which OS I preferred would have spoiled the gift surprise or something. So get him both.) OK. With the help of my son we stuffed everything in the tower, loaded up all the disks that came with and fired her up w/ a clean install of Win2000 (the next step up from Win98 in my mind) that took up residence in the new 200GB C:\Drive and my legacy 40GB became D:\Drive. OK, fine. Until shutdown and the woe of #reply-19744178 commences. Have you seen the SUV commercial on TV where a huge giant tree comes flying out of the sky and lands right in the middle of the highway? (Giving the shiny SUV opportunity to flex it's ability to climb over the huge tree.) And that highway, at the end of the commercial, turns out to be an intercoastal causeway? Anyway, that's exactly what Roxio software did to Win2000 in my new HD. Pulled my C:\tree up by its roots and threw it right in the middle of my pathway. Well that SUV turned out to be Mandrake Linux that my friend installed on D:\Drive. From there we were able to drive our way over the corrupted tree of C:\Drive and, en passant, rescue "My Documents" where some recent work had been stored. However Linux cold not locate a C:\Drive or D:\Drive so it assigned letters E:\ and F:\ to the two HDs in my system. Linux to the rescue! After rescuing what needed to be rescued it was time to re-install an OS. "Well to hell with 2000," I thought to myself, "Let's load up XP." That's when we found out that XP aborted setup claiming it couldn't install for some reason I couldn't fathom. Then I tried the Maxtor software that was used initially to format and set up the new HD. The installation CD couldn't find anything to do either and defaulted to a black screen DOS X Prompt. OK, so after I get the 'puter back from the Mother Shop, where a "promise card" (?) that came with the Maxtor HD that my son decided he didn't need to install finally got installed. (Had to go back to the Mother Shop a second time to learn how to install the correct driver for the promise card so XP could find my HDs. I had the distinct feeling he knew I'd have to come back. Abuse the dumb customers. Those smug guys remind me of cattlemen. 'Nother story though.) OK, so after the promise card driver was successfully installed (you have to press F8 repeatedly, just like you're playing a video game, to make sure you successfully punch in during that fleeting window of boot-up opportunity) XP setup finally found my HDs. Then it named them F:\Drive (used to be C:\Drive in 2000) and C:\Drive (used to be D;\Drive in 2000). OK, so what happens if, in some whim, I decide to call them by their old familiar names...C;\Drive and D:\Drive...in Disk Management. My "Program Files" will still really be labeled F:\ right? I've really accomplished nothing system wide, correct? Re Firebird, I can assure you no adware or other cost. Let me know what you think. Hell, Esteban, thecow uses it too! Prompt us for tips after you get going. [Edit: I see thecow makes assurances too.] Enjoy! Take care, Jerry in Omaha
