I remember reading a book by Richard Leo called "Edges of the Earth" in which he describes moving from Chicago to a remote homestead in Alaska. He was a dedicated vegetarian, but after awhile in the wild, doing physical work to survive, he realized he needed some kind of meat, that he just wasn't getting enough protein. There weren't enough fish around (he was up pretty high in the mountains) so his first meat in many years was a moose he killed, skinned, and gutted himself. It solved his problem.
