Doesn't that give them an incentive to jack the ad rates up?

It's business.

As a lawyer, if I pay $50 to a courier, I can only charge the client $50, unless there is an agreement in advance to add on overhead. Other professions are not as tightly regulated as lawyers. (I know lawyers are no different than anybody else, there are plenty who will screw the client any way they can.)

If Trippi was getting a cut out of everything he brokered for Dean, I assume it was spelled out in the contract. If not, he may be crazy like a fox in the short run, but just plain crazy in the long run.
