On the root article that started this one of two conversations, the issue is whether or not an America whose FP standard is its own self-interest can also serve the interests of others. I said yes, I think it is obviously so.

I think it is obviously so, as well, that it can. What I don't think is so is that it invariably does serve the interests of others or that it can presume its interests to be a proxy for the interests of others.

Whether those last two points are a rebuttal to an attitude implied by Rice or to some figment of my creation, there's no way to be sure. I am sure, however, that if the Administration is indeed proceeding on that arrogant and invalid notion, I disapprove.

We are a radical, revolutionary power seeking to overturn the status quo because the status quo is no longer sustainable, and is even dangerous. That's the conflict, IMHO.

I get that. That's a good way of putting it. But I think your way of putting it and my way of putting it--you're either scared or you aren't--are different faces of the same phenomenon. The big question is where is the danger and how much danger is there. Different folks see different dangers and have different responses to those dangers.

I think you are mistaken in characterizing what "conservatives" bitch about.

Fascinating choice of words. I assume that the quotes are there because you see the contradiction in the notion of a revolutionary conservative. <g>
