I imagine that what Kerry did was structure it as a loan from him to his campaign.

So down the road the campaign repays the loan to Kerry, and Kerry repays it to the bank. So, technically he will be able to say he repaid it himself, as the check to the bank will be drawn from his personal account.

I don't know any bank that would write a mortgage like that. If his income can't support the payments, he needs someone to co-sign the loan. (Either that or he needs to be on the Senate Banking Committee.)
