Not necessarily.. Remember that it was Yuri Andropov who was Gorbachev's patron during the latter's rise to power.

The KGB, by virtue of having exposure to western institutions and economies, were definitely in a better position to see the fallacy of the policies of Marxist-Leninism.

Some were obviously corrupt, but overall, I believe the KGB was pretty much like the CIA and other US intelligence agencies.. Patriotic people who were generally less corruptible than their political and military counterparts (since the military were often involved in business).

The very secrecy of their line of work probably tended to encourage strict internal controls..

I say this because this was the sense I got from people like Oleg Kalugin, when I attended one of his "exclusive" seminars back in mid-90's.
