True enough that identity and bonding into social groups is in our DNA, but not the groups with which we identify. We bond as we grow up and join various groups.

Very large scale identity is something people like and even prefer as shown by the sense of patriotic identity that Americans have - you know the chant "USA, USA, USA" and have seen the tears in the eyes; Democratic vs Republican battles notwithstanding. Also, count the crowd who identify with being Christian [whatever that means] and Moslem [whatever that means].

It's not a stretch to think that people might prefer to identify with a NUN. I quite like the idea of being a citizen of Earth rather than just a passport carrying Kiwi hoping to be allowed in to some place without undue harrassment. I quite like to think of everyone on Earth as my compatriots. I don't think I'm unique [in that regard anyway - we are all unique from our DNA to our life's experiences].
