Not opposed to the removal of SH - to pick up a theme discussed by Karen, Derek and Nadine: where the US government saw a bear ready to attack many people in Europe just saw a big, fat rat not justifying a war.

Iraq has very much faded into the background in Germany. The many domestic problems are dominating; in average TV news any Iraq story is about number 10 or later in the queue unless there is a major attack. For example, have a look at the latest FAZ weekly (the FAZ is maybe the most international German newspaper):

1. Only hoping to stop a merger
2. Israeli-Hezbollah prisoner swap in Cologne
3. Turkish-German integration smooths cultural divisions
4. Skin color not an issue for principal
5. Gerster firing criticized
6. State demanded cash to lift lien on mausoleum
7. Support for points system
8. Extradition sought from Argentina
9. Three Danes killed
10. Kohl contract was legal
11. Pay raise rejected
12. U.S.-German ties 'improve'

The first indirect reference to Iraq is article #12.

I also wonder if there isn't a bit of dislike for America/Americans thrown into the mix.

I am not aware of any "Don't buy American products" campaign comparable to the boycott of French products by some SIers, for instance - and I hope that there won't be a similar division of western countries again.
