Sounds like you have a realistic grip on things... whist I did!

I'm doing much the same thing that you are. I had quite a bit of money in CDs and was satisfied with what I was making when rates were around 7% for a four year CD. Now the going rate for a four year CD is around 3.55% (APY @ MBNA).

If I can pick up that 7% I'm satisfied and if I can get 10 to 12% so much the better.

Of course I'm sticking things out with my funds at Fidelity and Vanguard to come back. Collectively, all my funds at Vanguard are still around 25% below the highs set back a few years ago.

Some might think that setting my sights on 10% isn't realistic and that I should shoot for the moon but I'm 68 and don't know how long I'll be around this big blue marble. If I were 40 then I could afford to play the long time trend which history shows that the trend would be up....ANON

Even now, when I purchase a stock I have to worry that I might depart this earth and my wife won't know what I was doing and things could get screwed up....ANON

Sorry about that double response. I didn't even think that my effort to respond to your post worked. I was waiting and waiting after I clicked on the "post message" feature and the darn thing wouldn't clear. I even used the "back" button to try to clear things up and that didn't work so I left Silicon Investor for other places and when I came back today to see if there was a trace of my previous attempts I saw that there were two posts on the string. Sorry I cluttered up the place with so much rhetoric......ANON
