Lothians lead population growth

Some areas of Scotland look set to buck the trend and undergo a population increase in the next few years, according to figures published by the Registrar General yesterday.

The population of Scotland as a whole looks set to drop below the five million level within five years but in 10 of the country's 32 council areas the number of people is going up.

The greatest projected increase in population between 2002 and 2018 is in West Lothian with 15 per cent, followed by East Lothian with 12 per cent and Stirling with nine per cent.

The figures showed that the total population of Scotland should drop from 5.05 million in 2002 to 4.94 million in 2018, falling below 5 million in 2009.

Eilean Siar and Dundee City are forecast to have the largest decreases at 17 per cent and 14 per cent respectively, followed by Aberdeen with 12 per cent and Inverclyde with 11 per cent.
