<<One thing I really miss from when I lived in Arlington was fishing for catfish.>>

I have coffee with a catfishing addict. That's all he fishes for and has been at it for over 50 years. If he wakes up at 2am he'll take a leak, hook up his boat and go. He might drive to the river which is a little over an hour away or head North. When he heads North he stops and nets bait, launches in a river in Wisconsin 4 1/2 hours later. Fishes all day and night and drives home in the morning.

He only uses Zebco 808 spincast reels and shad for bait. It's not unusual for him to come home with 15 cats up to 20 pounds. One year he netted 800 shad to use for bait for a week long trip with 5 other guys and was looking for more. BTW, he's never eaten a bite of fish in his life, has them cleaned and gives them away.

Bass fishing is nice and sells lots of new boats, but I would just as soon catfish or crappie fish. When you say you live in Arlington, I don't know if you meant VA or TX, but if you lived in Arlington TX., then you were close to one of the states premier crappie and catfish lakes and that was Lake Tawakoni east of Dallas. We pulled some huge cats, and slabs of crappie from that lake, for sure.

I worked in D.C. for six years and never did meet anyone who liked to fish

That sounds a little scary... btw, I was in Arlington yesterday. My truck mechanic is there.

Washingtonians are generally spooked about the pollution in the Potomac. When I was growing up, few people fished around the city, but some did downstream, where they felt more comfortable with the water volume diluting any possible contamination. Also, few people fished catfish unless they were black, until you got further south, where everyone has a taste for it. There are other rivers that are fished by people in the Metro area, though I do not recall all of their names, and, of course, there is some fishing in the Bay.
