Are the institutions that are buying AWE just hoping that a greater fool will overpay for AWE's assets, or are they really that stupid

I suggest you look at AWE's last earnings report. While Verizon is booming, AWE is losing clients. AWE has an older base because they were also one of the first players out of the box in building their network. It will cost more to upgrade their network to 3G than it will others.

Nevertheless, it may still be cheaper to gain their footprint and customer list than to build from scratch, therefore the premium to buy AWE.

So no, not stupid, just arbitrating what type of bid they think AWE will get from suitors.

pchristi, Re: AWE buyout and your question "Are the institutions that are buying AWE just hoping that a greater fool will overpay for AWE's assets, or are they really that stupid? Are the institutions that are buying AWE just hoping that a greater fool will overpay for AWE's assets, or are they really that stupid?"

IMO, yes. From my observation over the years, listening to their talking heads on CNBS/ media in general, they haven't a clue on 3G CDMA wireless. Or, perhaps they're not clueless and are just attempting to move the market to favor their trading position. Or, perhaps the ones with a clue don't share their insight with the media.
