Jochen, I used to commute from Antwerpen to London about once a month and flew on Sabena. Their prices were absurd. I could do a two ticket deal and get half price, which was still absurd. I can't recall what the fares actually were, but they were certainly enjoying their monopoly and restrictions.

The aviation industry is like the early 20th century railways. All hats, brass, rules, supervisors and a great air of self-importance, bells, whistles. The railway station was like the International Airport of today in terms of superfluous drama. Now a train station is like a bus stop. Buy a ticket, get on the train, then get off at your stop.

Ryanair and others are starting to make the airline industry into a normal business, but governments still make a big drama and create superfluous hassles. The USA is making even more of a drama about air travel - which isn't totally surprising given the hijacking of aircraft on 911 and continuing Islamic Jihad threats to murder lots of people.
