I may have misinterpreted what you meant to say...but I went back and it still reads that way to me.

Ending the draft did not imo have anything to do with atrocities or drugs for that matter. The drug problem in the Army has been grossly overhyped. Abuse was and still is much lower than American society.

As for the weeding out process that is accomplished by pre-enlistment background checks and basic training.

Plenty of losers still volunteer and are turned down or weeded out in basic. That same process was effective in the days of the draft.
