the writer of the article makes several mistakes.

1. the demographics in the world have changed drastic since 1975
2. Future social obligation have increase several fold in the western world

3. The "Evil Empire" and expenses associated with that were almost eliminated. Now we have a different set of expenses which are addressing a different problem with unknown impact.

4. The world is much more flexible in it's adaptation to changing economic environments.

Just taking into account a single chart and ignoring the other factors that influence the world economics is misguided IMHO
