I have seen the Rio Grande in New Mexico. With such a low volume of water much of the year, and the maquilladores frequently emitting effluviants into it, I can imagine that it can get pretty rank. I do not know the precise current reputation of the Potomac, in respect of pollution. Obviously, some efforts were made since I was a teenager to get it cleaner. Still, I think most people are more comfortable fishing down towards Quantico, about an hour south of the city.........

Guess that is the way with most of our rivers. Connecticut river is probably 100% cleaner now than a few years back but I certainly would not eat the fish.
