I had family in Colonial Beach when I was a child, and sometimes went boating in the area. Of course, Colonial Beach is even further south of Quantico, another half- hour or so by boat. It is not very far from the mouth of the river, where it merges with the Bay, although I never sailed the distance to find out how long it took. It is very big, pretty much beginning past Mount Vernon and Fort Washington, and widening some afterward. It is also quite beautiful, of course. I used to fish (not very often) on the Maryland side, near the bridge continuing route 301.
