. Basically the people who I used to know working in tech who were laid off in 01 haven't been able to find work since. They are all working at starbucks or other retail.

that is terrible. didn't you used to do some outsourcing stuff? has all that been replaced by India?

was trying to hire programmers in IT for $1650/week with no benefits

according to Wired, avg US programmer salary is 70K, and i assume there are supposed to be benefits in addition to that. or maybe they mean all-in cost. in any case, $1650/week is just about equal to that amount, which would be the national average.

however, since you mean 70K in the Silicon Valley, i assume that is equivalent to 40-50K elsewhere. not very good indeed.

Its a real calamity imho

on the personal level it certainly is. but what can you do? if there are 2 million Indians who can do the same job as you for 1/9 the salary, what company wouldn't hire them? i think one problem is that the service sector has operated under the illusion of protection from competition, even as the public has become inured to erosion of the manufacturing base and high-paying blue-collar jobs. but high-speed connectivity has shattered the myth of protection for many services.

Lizzie, RE: "Cisco was trying to hire programmers in IT for $1650/week with no benefits"

$85,800 for a new IT hire with no experience, fresh out of school?

You consider that a calamity?
