US general predicts six to 12 more months of low-level violence in Iraq
Wed Feb 4,10:02 AM ET

TIKRIT, Iraq (AFP) - A top US army commander in Iraq (news - web sites) predicted that the insurgency would be quelled within a year and played down the anti-coalition attacks plaguing the country.

"I think we have another six to 12 months of this small insurgency ... and I think constant pressure though will take it down," Major General Raymond Odierno, who heads the Tikrit-based 4th Infantry Division, told reporters Wednesday.

As he patrolled the streets of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s northern hometown for the first time since the ousted Iraqi president was captured on December 13, Odierno said: "The difference is incredible.

"What we're down to is very small elements that are still trying to disrupt progress in Tikrit. The majority of the population are trying to move on," he said.

"They realise now that the old government is not going to come back ... There is this baseline of fear of Saddam Hussein that has now gone."

The general said the ongoing violence could also be seen as an internal battle to fill the power vacuum in post-war Iraq. "People are positioning to see what their role is in the next government and they are doing it by force."
