THE NOTE - NEWS SUMMARY

Two roads diverge today in seven states,
And we're sorry we cannot travel both.

And both this morning equally lie
In leaves no 2004 steps have trodden black.

It is up to (check the back of your envelopes) about 25,000 South Carolinians and Oklahomans to decide whether the Democratic nomination fight goes on to a covey of epic battleground fights in the coming weeks, or we as a transcontinental nation move towards an even-more-epic general election fight.

If the former, we can look forward to several weeks of attacks on special interest ties; comparisons of life experience; accusations of a do-nothing Senate record; talk about a French castle, off-shore tax shelters, the Big Dig, voting rights for felons, and the death penalty; and Roy Neel blog postings.

If the latter, we can get right to tax cuts for the wealthy; Iraq credibility; Halliburton; manufacturing job losses; the Texas National Guard; Maverick Media finally doing something visible for all that money; several weeks of attacks on special interest ties; comparisons of life experience; accusations of a do-nothing Senate record; talk about a French castle, off-shore tax shelters, the Big Dig, voting rights for felons, and the death penalty; and Chris Heinz and Laura Bush blog postings.

And one of the big questions, if the Democratic nomination is wrapped up early, is what politics will fill the months of March, April, May, June, and July, through the conventions.

Will the Democratic nominee go vacation in Western Massachusetts? Will the overall story go into hibernation, or will it be an intense nine-month gestation period covered for the duration as intensely as Gwyneth's pregnancy?
