As soon as offshoring came in vogue that momentum towards VR automation seems to have died.

Those and the various AI systems used to automate e-mail response are better but they still don't come any where near passing the Turing test. Recently a friend of mine showed me an e-mail response he thought came from a person. I said, no way and asked the bot a question that was close in wording to his but with completely different meaning and got the same instantaneous response to prove to him he'd been talking to a program. What is funny though is that one of the reasons I think he was initially fooled had to do with diminished expectations that came from recent experiences dealing with various human operators.

It reminds me of the old problems people would have when WYSIWYG word processing programs first started being used. They would do things that looked OK on the screen but would print out weirdly. Then I'd have to explain that the screen had a much lower resolution than the output device, so they couldn't trust the screen and format visually. Then they'd say, why can't they make a system that matches and I'd say they could but they'd have to make the out put device look a lot worse. The AI and VR systems are getting better only because they are being compared to a deteriorating quality in service personnel.
