You are reflecting the dominant voice of politics in the second decade. The Boomers KNOW that the entire fraud exists only a the whim of Congress-and they are desperate, seeing the direction that the Congress is gradually beginning to take...

I've supported allowing people to 'opt out' of the government programs (in favor of private investment choices) for a very long time.

And largely for two reasons:

1) any life-long plan which allows actual investment options instead of a transfer program like SS, is likely to give participants a greater return.

2) transfer payment programs (the choice for Social Security made by the FDR administration --- likely because of the inability to *fund* an investment program or a pension program at that point in history) are inherently subject to the fickle winds of Demographics... and since the population may always be expected to flucuate, transfer programs will always be flawed from one point of view or the other.

It seems though that politicians uniformly don't care about much beyond their immediate next election....

Hi Peter,

SS will not go away. You could just as easily wish for the IRS to go away and they won't. What will happen, is that SS will shrink with revenue vs dependents. The IRS will continue to squeeze every nickle they can out of you, My advice is for you to pay your taxes and plan for your own retirement.

Josh

PS. Rural property is cheap and owner financed everywhere. It's easier than buying a car. I recommend buying it for investment purposes and enjoyment. Go for 20 acres plus. You won't regret it.
