WMD sceptics are no eccentric fringe Sir, Gerard Baker ("Opposite views vindicate Bush and Blair", January 29) claims that those who doubted that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction were a "minority, eccentric" fringe and that "it is easy to forget the simple fact from a year ago that the case for war was based largely on information available at the time about Iraq's WMD programme". I believe Mr Baker is the one with the faulty memory. While Hans Blix and his team of UN inspectors scoured Iraq in the vain search for WMD, George W. Bush, Tony Blair and several senior officials of their governments made numerous assertions about specific chemical and biological weapons and their precise locations. Strangely, the inspectors found nothing. Proponents of war asked us to jump with them to the conclusion that Saddam had massive stockpiles of weapons and that he planned to use them against us. Now they want us to jump to the conclusion that this catastrophic error had nothing to do with the political leadership that took our nations to war but rather was the sole responsibility of the intelligence services. Many of us were sceptical then, and remain sceptical now. And we are neither a minority nor eccentric.
