The US looks back and long for the days when they were Nr. 1

Japan looks back and say, to the hell with it, no need to be Nr. 1. Just look to the US right now!

Germans are nostalgic of the DDR (the former Eastern Germany)

The lesson here is: Countries that have peaked -full of old people- look back to the good old days. Younger countries, full of young people, (hey, they got the babies!) look foward, not back.

This thing about manned space flight is about bribing Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Martin Marietta. It would require another crafty Apollo 13 'accident' to make people take an interest on this kind of stuff.
