The advantage is that you can literally print gold. Would
not you like, instead of working, just print the money
each month and deposit it into your account? Life would be
great then, wouldn't it? I believe, that's exactly the
advantage of having reserve currency - you have to just
print the currency to pay for foreign goods and services.
US has been doing just that (large trade deficit, rising $)
for a while, until the competition - the Euro - came along.
I guess the idea behind the Euro was to reduce the dependence
of Europe on the dollar-denominated trade, not actually to
export inflation. Although, inflation has been pretty high
in Europe throughout the 90-s....

I guess, what has been an advantage could rapidly become
a disadvantage, should nobody want the dollars.
