The gulf between the two centers is wider than i have seen it in a long time. Joe Lieberman of the old dem center unable to get to double digits is a further example. In any case, we are headed for another SCOTUS outcome if Bush doesnt shake up his political team. The SOTU speech highlighting steroids was a complete flop. Cheney stonewalling on WMDs up until the Kay day was just plain dumb. Now we have Powell saying that the war in iraq may not have happened in the time frame it did, if the US knew the wmd intel was inaccurate. Sure there were other reasons--the most valid being the realpolitik of positioning an alternative to saudi or iranian dominance of the culture and region. But Powell was right in saying that without wmds we certainly could have pursued the diplomatic avenue for a longer time, perhaps delaying the war for a year or more(how to convince france and russia, colin??). Anyway the american people now think they were duped. War is not a popular thing here in the first place and once american smell a rat even if imaginery there will be problems. What should bush do to recapture the lead. 1. Fess up on wmds being outraged while explaining the other reasons more fully and talking abouts the facts of wmd use that made their existance seem probable. 2. Fire one one of the gang---rummy, cheney, wolfy--I dont care. I have suggested haliburton tainted cheney should be the one to go for "health" reasons. Maybe americans mayor would be a good vp replacement? 3. Control spending and make some adjustments in the tax cuts going forward at the higher rates and with the death tax, so as not to appear to be scrooge. Those of us who are well off who voted for bush are becoming as isolated from general american opinion as Sr. was with the scanners. If we can make some concessions to the populists on taxes while taking a serious look at the deficits, while the economy starts its global boom, Bush can still win.
