all brought about by American occupation, which, of course is viewed as bad thing in Iraq by the majority of the world today

And not only in Japan, but in Germany, where a coalition of the willing ousted a dictator who was every bit as vicious as Saddam, and who also used poison gas against civilians, and replaced it first with an occupation leading to a functioning democracy. Ironic, perhaps, that by our occupations and rebuilding efforts we created the two strongest competitors to our own economic power of the last quarter century and two of the strongest democracies in the world.

With its oil wealth and human resources, Iraq in 20 years could well become another Japan or Germany.

There's a wonderful little movie, "The Mouse that Roared," about the benefits of losing a war with the US.

It's really a mistake to consider Iraq in an occupation state. Occupation comes after the war. Iraq is still in the middle of the war. It doesn't matter how many Mission Accomplished banners are hung by one side, if the other side hasn't given up the war is still on.

the U.S., having been attacked by Japan to begin with

The Japanese did not attack the U.S. They attacked a foreign military base, after significant provocation. Japan got all of their oil from us. We slapped an oil embargo on them, and then threatened military action if the Japanese tried to gain control of SE Asian oil.

centuries of Japanese warlords pillaging and raping the rest of Asia and the Pacific were brought to an end

Replaced by American raping and pillaging - on a vastly larger scale.
