But the fact is, he didn't win The Cold War any more than Harry Truman, or Churchill or Stalin won WWII.

Sure he did, just as they did.

In 1980 we reached that fateful crossroad: Jimmy Carter merely wanted us to get over our 'inordinate fear of communism' while Ronald Reagan saw the opportunity to kill Communism once and for all.

And you don't think that difference in moral clarity made all the difference in the world?

The reason why only winners who 'got it' get to write history is so that the genuine winning patterns of behavior get codified and handed down to the next generations, be those patterns be divine providence or peace through strength or whatever. Losers who never got it tend to dwell too much on the twisted nuances of the trivial.
