My knowledge is from North Dakota where we raise grains, beans, corn, sugar beets, sunflowers, etc. The costs to raise these crops have gone up "huge" Fertilizer costs have gone through the roof as well as oil and gas. The global demand and US exports of these products are critical to operators since prices are set by supply and demand.

Another problem is our transportation system is expensive relative to competitive nations. Since these farms are in the center of the nation and shipping to east Asia is costly because the ports are on the west coast. If the products are shipped west they can be loaded in Lake Superior which is closer and less expensive
