No, saying I am right does not make me right. You are aware, though, that, on the argument over the Cold War, it is not a matter of Left/Right controversy. Why the Soviet Union fell is controversial, but no one believes that we "won" during the Cuban Missile Crisis, that I have ever seen, with the exception of you. Thus, in insisting that you are mistaken on that matter, I am not speaking as a "right wing nut", but as someone conforming to mainstream historiography. It is as if you are asserting that the slaves were freed in the 1840s, and I am insisting that they were not freed until the Emancipation Proclamation and the enactment of the 14th amendment, in the 1860s.

I am a right wing nut only if you think that someone whose heroes include FDR, Harry Truman, and Ronald Reagan qualifies. I became a strong anti- communist as a child as a result of reading George Orwell, a democratic socialist. I worked in a local campaign office for George McGovern in high school, but by the end of college, I had seen some of the effects of a weakened foreign policy, including the collapse of Southeast Asia, the killing fields of Pol Pot (even McGovern called for intervention in Cambodia, but it was too late), an increase in Soviet adventurism in places like Afghanistan, the Soviet use of Cuba as a proxy for intervening in Central America and Africa, the attempt to neutralize our NATO allies through "peace initiatives" sponsored by the Soviet Union, and other such consequences, so I voted for Reagan over Carter. The results were satisfactory, and eventually I became a Republican.

The universe is a more complex and interesting place than you have yet realized........
