what was your home heating and cooling bill?

We don't have home heating systems installed in the Islands. Spend all my time in shorts. If you feel cold, you put on a shirt. This time of year is one day after another of "low 70, high 80." My air conditioning is included with my condo rent. I run it in the summer, when the range is "low 78, high 89."

They are so overbuilt on low-end condos that buying doesn't make sense. I pay $650 a month for my place, for everything, furnished, right behind the Waikiki Hyatt on the beach. Been here three years now, and no rent increase in sight.

This was a "Plantation Economy," run by the "Big Five," until the ethnic Japanese, who run the Unions, took over in '54. They were the one who went to war, and came back heroes. They own the Politics. The ethnic Chinese got exemptions and worked at Pearl. They own the property.

Now, after 40 years Democratic rule, the "production" economy is so "welfare" that it is stalled and going nowhere. Almost a "Euro" situation. The kids that don't tie into the Tourist industry move to the mainland to make a living.

So we are "boom or bust" depending on the Tourist economy, which is still slowly coming back from 911. JAL still doesn't have as many daily flights from Japan as they had prior. A couple of new Cruise ships that will be based here next year will be a big help.

With my rent and transportation fairly "fixed," My expenses for food, clothing, and household are trending down every year as Costco and Wal Mart make it cheaper to live here.

and some of it's tragic,
