I tend to agree with your last statement. Though I don't think the initial argument for not eating meat on the morality grounds you cited, uh, holds water anymore. In other words, if I'm hearing you right if we all were willing to cut back on total consumption say 60% but continue to eat some meat in the process (even for example meat raised on grasses alone) I think you'd be for it. I would be.
