red, The main problem I see is that the "good ol' boy" stuff plays poorly when it turns out you got preferential enlistment in the Texas Champagne unit. And, even with that cushy appointment, you didn't do your full service. BTW, normal guys who disappeared from NG units found out that they immediately became active duty privates and sent to Nam or they faced prosecution. However, the law changes state by state, which may be why he switched to Alabama from Texas. Though I can't imagine Alabama being soft on Awols.
