As I pointed out, patents are very big business these days, witness Rambus's strangle hold on the memory business, TI's large royalty income, and the cross licensing power of IBM and Intel... It's true, that some companies file a lot of crap in hopes of hitting the lottery....this is at a ridiculous stage in Taiwan....But it often turns out to be true that the patent you think is the weakest one or most harebrained one turns out to far more valuable than the ones you're most proud of.

re: driver's licenses.....There are lots of people who have drivers licenses from several states, but it doesn't make them better drivers, ie a drivers license is a driver's license. Each patent is necessarily distinctive, by definition. The only time you patent the same thing is when you also seek a patent in another country to protect your IP rights there.
